Reincarnation is the belief that the soul incarnates into the earth plane many times, in order to learn all the things it must know to continue on in its development.
Reincarnation cannot be proved. But so goes the basis for all of our spiritual beliefs. The belief in reincarnation can serve as a tool for personal development. It gives us insights on ourselves and teaches us to become more aware of our own responsibilities and actions. When you think about it, it almost seems silly to think that we can learn all we need to learn in just one lifetime.
Reincarnation can help us identify why we are the way we are. You may have wondered why you have a certain fear or habit. Reincarnation can help you find the source and improve upon it if need be. It can help you realize why you have certain talents, or why you like some people instantly, and feel just the opposite with others. It can help you clear obstacles in your life and make your path smoother.
So why don't we remember anything from our past lives? Forgetting gives us the opportunity to begin anew. If we knew all the mistakes we had ever made in all of our past lives, it would most likely hamper our progress in this life. Or if we knew that we were rich in a past incarnation, we may expect things to be that way in this life.
The principle of karma in reincarnation is often an aspect of the belief that many become confused with. Karma, known also as the law of cause and effect, are the conditions that must be met and dealt with because of a past action. Whatever you do comes back to you, whether it is good or bad. It is best not to approach the subject with a fatalist attitude, i.e. "It's my bad karma catching up with me and there's nothing I can do about it." Karma can be met and dealt with. The purpose of karma is not to punish us, but to teach us what we must learn to live in harmony with the universe.
There are many different forms that karma can take. Let me give you some examples:
In a past life, you constantly physically abused another person. In this life, you are constantly physically abused by someone else.
This is probably the form most of us think about when we think of karma. There are other kinds as well. For example:
In a past life, you killed someone by suffocating them to death. In this life, you may have severe asthma or breathing problems.
This one seems a little more indirect than the previous one. However, this doesn't mean that everyone you meet that has asthma has killed someone in a past life. Something that applies to one person doesn't necessarily apply to another. There's also another example of karma:
If you always turned a deaf ear on someone in a past life, you may be born with hearing problems.
There are probably many other forms as well.
In dealing with karma, people often think only of bad karma. Whenever something bad happens, some people blame it on bad karma. Then whenever something good happens, we tend to think it is what we deserve or it is the way things should be. You are not "unlucky" if something goes wrong, or "lucky" if something goes right. Be aware that you choose your own path, along with the things that come with it. These are opportunities to grow and learn.
So though through reincarnation we must all face up to our past actions, we still have a choice in how we face up to those actions. We can allow ourselves to become a victim, or we can make ourselves stronger. Either way, we're going to have to face up to the situations that we create.
If at one point you realize that you have done wrong and have truly learned your lesson, you may find yourself dealing with the intervention of grace. This is when you can "dodge" the corrective action of karma because you have come to realize that what you have done is wrong, and you go to work fixing this. However, grace is not an excuse to dodge your responsibilities and make up for them later. It only comes to you when you have truly gained understanding, and you move to use that understanding in your life.
Awareness of grace can come to you when you are facing a difficult situation and you call out for help. At that moment, it may feel as if someone has lifted an enormous weight off your shoulders, or you feel as if everything is going to be all right. It can come to you at a time when you feel down and suddenly you find the strength to continue, or in a moment of inspiration. Opening ourselves to grace can make our paths easier to travel.
This is one I learned some time ago, but is pretty helpful. You'll need someone to help you with this exercise.
Get a candle. Let your partner sit across from you. Make sure the lights are either turned down low or completely off. The candle should be lit. Now the person that is going to learn about his past lives should close his eyes. He should then relax by counting down from 20 or something or else visualize the colour spectrum, starting from violet and ending in red.
Then he should see himself going down a spiral staircase and into a room. The room should be one where he feels comfortable and relaxed. Maybe the person should visualize a forest-like setting. Then he should instruct his mind to show his past-lives across his face for the other person to see.
When he has done all these steps, he should give the other person a sign to show him that he is ready. He can snap his fingers or say, "I'm ready," as long as it doesn't disturb his relaxation.
Now it's time for the other person to come in. As the person across from him is relaxing, he should squint his eyes and look at the other's face. After a while, he may start to see things and images flash across the other person's face. He may see a beard where there was none before, or the hair may get longer or shorter. Watch silently, don't say anything. After a few minutes, each person may be getting tired and so the exercise can be ended by the person being read coming out of the room, up the staircase, and counting up.
The person that was watching the other one can tell him what he saw, and if you want, you can switch positions and do it again.
There's another technique that I know of that utilizes past life recall through dreams. This one should be pretty easy, but if you don't remember your dreams very often it may be a little difficult for you. Before you go to sleep at night, tell yourself that you would like to have a dream or dreams of one of your past lives, and that you shall remember it. Repeat this to yourself a few times, and make sure you put some feeling behind it. Concentrate. Then go to sleep and hopefully you will have at least a few images in your dreams that correspond to one of your past lives.
What is reincarnation?
To answer this question simply, reincarnation is the theory that the
soul returns to earth numerous times, in cycles of life and death, in order to
further its own development.
Why do we reincarnate?
We are spiritual beings. We were created in order to be companions to
the Creator, and have been given the choice of free will. Our Creator would not
want us to be mindless beings, following Him because He told us to do so.
Because of this imperfection, we come again and again to the earth plane in
order to develop our individuality and to grow fully as spiritual beings.
How many incarnations does each soul have to take?
There is no set number here. A soul is given as many incarnations as it
takes in order to become perfect in its development. While some souls may finish
their development with only a few incarnations, others may take hundreds in
order to do so.
How often does a soul return to earth?
As in the last answer, there is no set number. Some souls choose to
return minutes or weeks after their last incarnation. Others wait centuries,
millennia even, before they choose to return.
When exactly does the soul enter the body?
There are many different theories on this, but I believe that the soul
usually enters the body at birth. However, oftentimes souls will be in
the presence of the mother during gestation.
Is it only possible to come back as a human?
Again, there are several theories on this, but I can only tell you about
my own personal beliefs. I do not embrace the theory of transmigration, which
means that it is possible to incarnate into other life forms as well as humans.
I believe that we can only come back as humans.
If all souls were created in the beginning, then how
would you explain population growth?
Although all souls were created in the beginning, not all choose to
incarnate at the same time. Some souls prefer to learn and gather experiences on
other planes, rather than the earth plane. There are also those that do both.
The souls on earth are only a portion of those that have been created.
Is it possible that I have known my friends, family,
etc. in a past life?
Definitely! Many times, groups of souls will incarnate together in order
to learn similar lessons. Many times we meet someone and feel as if we have
known them before, or for some odd reason we feel an instant liking for them.
Chances are, you knew this person in one of your past lives.
What about soul mates?
It is highly possible that you have shared many lives with another soul,
and that you have a very close bond. However, a soul mate is made a soul mate
not because they have shared many lives with you, but more likely because you
have about the same level of experience and mind. And it is possible and highly
likely that you have more than one soul mate.
