Divination by Dice

The use of dice for all manner of games of chance dates from time
immemorial. In ancient Egypt, classic Greece and the countries of the
Far East, cubes of wood, metal, ivory or glass, with their sides
numbered from 1 to 6, were popular not only for gaming but also as a
means of consultation. Through their medium it was found that future
events could be predicted and the turn of fate be made manifest.
Preparation in the traditional style is of the simplest. A circle is
drawn in white chalk on the board or table on which the throws are to
be made. Any dice which fall or roll outside this circle are not
considered, unless they fall on the floor, when it id a presage of
violent quarrels.

Three dice must be used and shaken in the box with the left hand. The
following are the interpretations of the sum of the numbers which fall
uppermost:

Three

Good luck awaits you; your wish will be fulfilled or an
unexpected and pleasing event will take place.

Four

A disappointment is near at hand.

Five

Someone as yet unknown to you will bring you much happiness.

Six

A portion of your worldly goods will be lost, but a gain in
spiritual matters is indicated.

Seven

The vicious tongue of scandal is wagging; pay no heed to it, the
accusations are unfounded.

Eight

You are pursuing a course which is both unwise and unjust; be
prepared for a reprimand and profit accordingly.

Nine

Success in love affairs; outstanding quarrels will end in
reconciliation.

Ten

Great happiness in the family and a progressive step in your
business.

Eleven

Illness of someone you know, which may cause some anxiety for a
time.

Twelve

You will receive a letter which will call for a quick decision,
but do not act without advice from a friend.

Thirteen

Sorrow, which for long will remain uncomforted.

Fourteen

A new friend who will become very dear to you.

Fifteen

Let your conscience guide you; do not become involved in an
affair which you suspect to be illegal or unjust.

Sixteen

You are shortly to make a pleasant and profitable journey; let
nothing delay you.

Seventeen

A stranger from abroad will make a suggestion by which you
should be guided for future success.

Eighteen

Great luck and happiness, monetary gain and a rise in
position. This will be fulfilled in the very near future.

Mondays, or days when the atmosphere is very heavily charged with
electrical forces, as in stormy weather, are bad occasions for
consultation, for then the omens are often erratic or inaccurate. The
best conditions of all are present in the calm of the evening, about two
hours after sundown. Strict silence must be maintained during the
shaking and throwing.

If the same number, whatever its denomination, should turn up more than
once during a consultation it signifies the advent of important news. To
throw the dice so that one remains on top of the other is a warning omen
for women, foretelling the deceit of an admirer; for men also it
presages a need for great caution.
