Dragon Magick

Dragons are wonderful, magickal creatures that have been misunderstood for
centuries. Perhaps one of the most common legendary monster, the
dragon, is perceived as an immense, bat-winged, fire-breathing,
scaled lizard or snake. Some have the head and forelegs of a lion
or bird of prey. Because of their terror-inspiring qualities and
decorative figures, dragons were commonly used as warlike
emblems. Along with the myths of dragons came legends of
dragons layers.

Perhaps all these myths and legends are true. Only time will tell.

Dragon Magick
 

In all forms of magick, the universe and everything in it are said to
be made up of four elements: Air, Fire, Water, Earth. The
element of Spirit rules the centre as a balance. In dragon magick,
specific dragons rule these elements and help to create through
their powers.

These four elements correspond to the four directions, the four
quarters of the universe, the four winds, and the four quarters of
the magickal circle.

Each element has assigned traditional rulers and boundaries to
their kingdoms. They possess form and force, and can influence
our personalities as well as magickal procedures. Each element
and its dragons has certain qualities, natures, moods, and
magickal purposes; each has positive and negative traits. Because
the magician calls upon each element and its ruler, it is very
important to understand them, what they are and what they do.


A Dragon is a fabulous animal represented as a
large-winged, scaly serpent with a crested head and huge claws.

In reality, where did the conception of this great beast come from? Perhaps it's
origin is our imagination and dreams. When did it come alive? Perhaps life
happened when mankind's first nightmare breathed life into it. Some people say this
magnificent creature is unreal and, of course, you have those who say it lives. I
believe the latter . . . do you?

In actuality, the creature is of a tremendous size and immense intelligence. As with
all living things, there are different ages, sizes, types, and shapes. It is said that
dragons of evil nature are such colours as white, black, green, blue, or red, whereas
the good and kind dragons are said to be metallic colours such as brass, bronze,
silver, gold, or platinum. To be truthful, the colour of the creature's scales have
nothing to do with its nature, but rather its breath weapon, strength and intelligence.
In truth, dragons are neither good nor evil, but what their environment makes them .
. . just as it is with mankind. Dragons have been christened with such elite titles as
Guardian of Law, Champion of Justice, Defender of Mercy, Protector of Purity, and
Patron of Virtue. Throughout history, they've befriended the helpless and weak,
ridding the world of those who are merciless and unjust. Although not destructive
by nature, all dragons have been known on occasion in their zeal for valour, even if
by accident, to obliterate their enemies while carrying out one of their elite titles.
The question is, will we ever see one? Sadly, the answer of present day is no
because our reality is too hard, cold and industrious. Our world lacks the
imagination and creativity the great dragons from ancient realms need to survive for
extended periods of time. However, if we close our eyes and dream, we can travel
to the medieval age of the mighty knights and the magnificent world of Camelot
where perhaps then, the answer will be yes. As it is, the majestic dragons, although
silent and patient, still dwell within the caves of our dreams, waiting to be called
forth to carry out their exalted titles.

O Lord, who made the dragon, and the dragon's open sky, And gave to me a
dragon's soul; a dragon's urge to fly-- Let me dance within your cloudscapes far
beyond Earth's chain, Let me rejoice in my grandeur, let me not grow vain! Let me
vindicate my honour with my fang and claw, Let my raging heart show mercy, let that
show no flaw! Let me have the joy of all the shining gold I've stored, Let no
pauper-dragon go forth starving from my hoard. And, Lord, should the need arise
and I be called to fight, Dragon-Maker, make me victor, and, God--help that knight!

My friends, All of us love Dragons. Not only because they represent something
which we believe is missing in ourselves, such as nobility or honour, but because
they are part of the "old world". Where anything was possible. Some people say
that Dragons never lived or have died out of this world. I say they haven't. We just
need to rethink ourselves and get back our innocence to see them again. Not our
"purity" as man thinks of it but innocence. How long has it been since you took time
out of your very busy life and just sat? Watched the sun come up or go down,
watched the stars shine in the velvet darkness, or even just watched the birds?
When you can do those things and recapture your joy in simple things than maybe
just maybe we will see the dragons again. They are there... living just out of sight
with all of the other beauties of ages past like the Faeries, Gnomes, Sprites,
Sylpths, Unicorns and Griffons. Please try sometime. I think that they are just
waiting for us to believe again. I know we live in a world that is hard to exist in.
One of poverty, disease and war.. but beauty is only a belief away. We can make
the changes that our world needs...if we only try.

 Dragons of The Elements
 

Air Dragons

Supposedly, the ruler of the Eastern Quarter of the circle is
Sairys. (sair'-iss)The color is pure yellow, or white. It's considered
warm and moist. They influence wind, storms, weather. Also
communication, gossip, intelligence, joy, bragging, forgetfulness,
etc.

You may know a Dragon of air by the feeling he generates. Have
you been bragging, gossiping, or have you felt joyful with a nice
mental quickness? In circle, this may be your Dragon of the East
bidding you a quick hello. Ask this type of dragon to help you
prevent/cause windstorms, tornados, and the like. But, as a
warning, this dragon rules fickleness (it's one of the negative
associations with this element) so be prepared, if the Dragon
chooses you, and then chooses someone else.. tis the nature of this
element.

Fire Dragons

Supposedly, the ruler of the Southern Quarter is named Fafnir.
(faf'-near) This ruler oversees the Dragons of Sunbeams and
Fire. It's colour is Red, or orange. It's considered warm and dry. It
corresponds to the Sun, enthusiasm, passion, courage, leadership,
hate, jealousy, war, conflicts, lightning, and both harmful and
helpful fire of any kind.

Have you felt a passion that you didn't feel before? Or are you
getting into unnecessary conflicts with people in circle? This may
be the feeling of the Dragon of Fire, bidding hello. This dragon
can help you start wars, although, not to finish them to a
"positive" end. This is a more dangerous dragon to ask into your
circle, since this deals with the fire of Human drive. The negative
associations may not be worth the positive if treated
un respectfully.

Water Dragons

Supposedly, the ruler of the Western Quarter is named
Naelyan (nail'-yon). Who oversees dragons of all types of
waters. It's colour is pure blue (sometimes also, a turquoise or
lavender). And it's cold and moist. It corresponds with
compassion, peacefulness, forgiveness, love, intuition, calmness,
rainstorms, laziness, indifference, insecurity.

Have you felt insecure about something, or felt this unknown
feeling of forgiveness for someone? This is the Dragon of
Water tipping his hat (if he had one) to you. This dragon can
help you develop psychic powers, love another person, and feel
forgiveness. But, that goes along also with feeling lazy,
indifferent, and insecure, which are also under this dragon's
domain. Also, are you doing a spell close to a body of water?
This dragon may be the one to ask to be a guardian.

Earth Dragons

Supposedly the ruler of the Northern Quarter is Grael (Grail.)
He overseas all the Dragons of mountains, minerals, land, and
moonbeams. It's colour is dark green, or at times black or brown.
It's cold and dry. It's associations are gemstones, mountains,
caves, respect, endurance, responsibility, stability, prosperity,
also, rigidity, unwillingness to change, stubbornness, lack of
conscience.

Have you felt that you can endure anything? Or perhaps, being
overly stubborn in a situation during circle? You are saying hello
to a Dragon of Earth. This is a type of Dragon to ask to help
protect your circle, but also one to be wary of if you are already
feeling too much stubbornness and rigidity in life.


Akashic Dragons

These Dragons rule the centre of your circle. Both positive
and negative, black and white, (although, those two
associations aren't necessarily parallels of each other). They
are considered warm and dry for the positive aspect, and
moist and cold for the negative. The associations are seeking
the truth, bettering life, psychic guidance, self-righteousness.
For the negative, the associations are: dreams, rest, psychic
guidance, balancing karma, anger, hate, fear, unjustified
revenge.

These are definitely powerful Dragons. All the elemental
Dragons are powerful, but those 2 halves inside of you, the
darkness in the light, may be the most powerful of all. Be
wary when inviting them to help you in your magick, since
these are the dragons that work most WITH karma, and you
do not want to disturb their course.

BackDragon Runes And Ritual Items


Here is a list of the basics you will need, I won't get into depth
here, but I will on the spell page. Please don't forget to cleanse
(with magick) all your items before you start on ANYTHING.
That includes cleansing yourself too, I'll have a spell on the spell
page on how to do that too later on. Down below is a picture of
the dragon runes you can use to write your magickal name on
your runes or to write out what you need in their tongue.


RITUAL ITEMS

Well here is a list of the basics you will need to get started on the
path:


An altar, I use a chest so that when I'm done I can place everything
inside until I do magick again, but the plain floor works too. 2 altar
candles, in the book Dancing with Dragons she says to use a black
on left and white on right. Well I found it hard to find black pillar
candles unless it was Halloween she says you can use dark blue or
a purple. Incense burner, this can be anything fire proof. Sword
element FIRE, I used a dagger until I could afford one. Dagger
element FIRE, two edged. Magick wand element AIR, this can be
just a stick. Staff again a walking stick, decorate with dragon
images you can write you name in dragon runes on the staff. Cup
for water element WATER. Cup for wine element EARTH.
Container for salt this is element EARTH. Bowl element EARTH,
this will be used to empower objects. Fill it with dirt, sand any soil
that calls out to you. Bowl for stones and gems element EARTH,
clear glass is best. Small bottles or jars with lids, (baby food jars
work great) element WATER, use to collect water you feel calls
out to you. Pentacle tile element SPIRIT-EARTH used for
consecration. Dragon pentacle element SPIRIT, I drew a dragon
around a pentacle on a piece of paper. Mirror element
EARTH-SPIRIT. That's about all you need to get started I'll go
into depth later on how you use these in your magickal needs.


BackDragon Spellbox
 

Buy or make a box out of any material you like, decorate it with
dragon images and dragon runes. Soon I will have dragon runes
on the site. Anyway a recent photo of yourself, 1 quartz crystal, 1
pyramid any size if you can't buy one make a paper one and three
small squares of paper. Write out your three wishes, place in the
box. Place crystal on top of wishes, then place the top on. Align
the box to face true north in a place it won't be disturbed. Place
photo on top, put pyramid on top and align to the directions. Hold
palms of your hands around your box and say three times with
great feeling:

Dragon wishing box, I trust to you these wishes.
Make them all come true.
My desires, I beg you fill.
So mote it be, just as I will.

Visit your dragon spell box once or twice a week, and tell it that
you trust in its work. Renew every solstice and equinox.

BackDragon House Cleansing
 

All you need for this is a smudge stick and a feather to help the
smoke into the corners (its a insult to blow the smoke) go
CLOCKWISE and do all 4 corners of all rooms in the house
including the attic and basement if you have one. Say with great
feeling:

O GREAT DRAGONS!
POWERS OF WATER, EARTH, FIRE, AND SKIES.
I CLEANSE THIS HOUSE.
SO ONLY POSITIVE ENERGY MAY ENTER.
AS I WILL SO MOTE IT BE!

Do this when ever you feel the house needs to be cleared of
negative energies.

Dragons Of The Zodiac


As there are dragons of the Planets, so are there dragons of each
sign. Some magickal systems look upon these dragons devic1 in
nature and therefore not as powerful as element I have not found
this to be so. I leave it to your own personal experience to decide
the situation.

Sometimes we need to enhance the good qualities of the sign
under which we were born, sometimes lessen the negative
qualities. Many times we need the qualities and energies of other
signs for a short period. By using the chant under each zodiac
sign, the magician can add to her/his magickal energies,
particularly when she/he must face a sticky situation or deal with
difficult people. However, no magician should work with the
powers of one sign too long or she/he may develop too much of a
particular power, thereby overbalancing.

As with planetary dragons, indeed all dragons, the magician
should extend a mental invitation to join the ritual. Choose music
that reflects to you the zodiac sign with which you are working.
Steven Halpern has recorded some very beautiful New Age music
specifically for the zodiac signs, but these may not appeal to you.
Response to music is a very personal thing. Your responses can
even change from time to time, depending upon your emotions,
physical health, and environmental situation. What feels right one
time may not be appropriate at another.

Like the planetary rituals, these zodiac rites use candles, herbs,
and oils of the appropriate sign to connect with dragon energy
and draw on it. The colours in parentheses are those given by the
astrologer Noel Tyl.

Use the Basic Dragon Ritual as a foundation ritual, adding the
appropriate colours, herbs, etc. Insert these chants in the place
where spell working is called for. Dance with your dragons; sing
with them; chant vowel sounds with them. At the end of
whichever zodiac chant you decide to use, meditate on absorbing
the energies and qualities for which you have asked. Listen
inwardly for suggestions.

Aries

Flower: Geranium.
Description: Energetic, impatient, lacking in foresight,

The choice of the hour of the Moon is strictly my preference as
there is never a planetary hour listed for this sign. However, I feel
that, since the Moon rules water, this is a logical choice.
Colour: Iridescent blues (Tyl-rust, dark orange).
Ruling Planet: Uranus.
Stone: Amethyst.
Flower: Orchid.
Description: Perceptive, temperamental, organized, erratic, cool,
detached, ingenious, impersonal, goal-oriented, insightful,
out-going, self-expressive, unconventional.

Pisces

Notes: Perform during bright daylight or the hour of Venus, and
during the waxing Moon, with the Full Moon being strongest.
Again, this zodiac sign has no corresponding usable planetary
hour. However, it is considered the exaltation of Venus, so I chose
this planet.
Colour: Sea greens (Tyl-dark blue).
Ruling Planet: Neptune.
Stone: Aquamarine.
Flower: Water lily.
Description: Refined, shrewd, impractical, nagging, unstable,
con artist, impressionable, compassionate, escapist or drifter,
paranoiac, dreamer, intuitive.
